American thanksgiving

Today is Thanksgiving in the US. My Instagram, Bloglovin and Facebook feeds are full of people talking about food and loved ones.

Thanksgiving in Canada was over a month ago (and I have to say that it's so weird that American Thanksgiving is so close to Christmas!) but I think it's important to be thankful most days. Here's a list of small things that I'm thankful for.

1) The smell of toast in the office in the morning. It's so comforting, even though it makes me hungry.
2) Hot water to shower with. This is especially wonderful to stand under after washing my hairs with cold.
3) The song "Mr Jones". I know it's like from 1994 but it still holds up.
4) Shredding things. It's so satisfying.
5) Having a clean email inbox
6) Plans that I'm looking forward to for the weekend
7) An extra day off on Monday
8) London Fogs - do you know these? (I've run across people that don't). Steamed milk, vanilla syrup & Earl Grey Tea. Great alternative to coffee.
9) When I can feel like I'm getting stronger in yoga. Every week slowly, slowly.

Saturday Show & Tell

It's Saturday!

My city is hosting the Grey Cup, the biggest event in the Canadian Football League. And our team is in it. This is a city that really gets behind things. We love everything that happens and support it with excitement. Perhaps it's because not a lot happens here. A few years ago the man-made lake in the centre of the city (which is surrounded by a gorgeous park that is bigger than Central Park in NY) was drained and dug deeper. People went out to watch the machines. A book was written! We love stuff! And some people might say it's just bandwagon-jumping but I like to think of it as indiscriminate enthusiasm. And that's not a bad thing.

Anyway, the point is that the whole city is in party mode for the big game tomorrow. I'm hoping to find someplace to watch it (I love shouting in public) that is close to home and that we can walk to because if we win people will be filling the streets!

On to some links to keep you warm!

Keep going, keep going. A pep talk!

Things we all need to get back into

Sal always gets it right. This is a look I could definitely imitate!

Lovely things to do before you die.

Our ancestors slept twice a night instead of one long chunk of time. Weird.

I've been taking some yoga and been thinking "good show D, your flexibility is really coming along." And then I saw this and it was amazing.

Thought-provoking article about what you want and what pain you're wiling to sustain to get there.

For leavings sake

A very smart and very lovely friend sent this to me the other day.

I love it.

Teal and gold

What do you do on a cold and snowy Saturday afternoon? Go through your Pins and...

Do outrageous makeup of course. (Opposite and very inexpertly)

I didn't really realize that we'd me going out when I did this... But then we poked around a bookstore for a while. Pretty fancy.

Linking up today with Style Journey for Pinned It and Did It!

Window Shopping

Sock glue is a thing and I want it! I also want the confidence and warm climate to be able to wear thigh high tights on a regular basis.

I love love love this skirt. I can't wait till it goes on sale!

I really fancy this veggie sprialler. I can use my imagination and believe that it's pasta!
Once upon a time I had an awesome pair of lace leggings. I've been looking for a replacement pair forever. These might work but they are too expensive for leggings.

Compulsion to Dance

Let's talk about dancing.

To dance is a very human activity. It has been around for millenia for rituals, celebration, and entertainment. It's a way we celebrate culture. It was the way that we courted for many years. My grandma told me stories of filling her dance card with beaus.

For me, I've always loved to dance. I would dance up the driveway of my friend's house. I took lessons for all of my childhood and loved it. I remember dancing out the the car after my mom took me to see the Nutcracker Ballet almost every year. The music, the moves, the joy that dancing brings. I truly believe that if people just let themselves feel the music and let their body move the way that it wants to, there would be no bad dancers.

This guy understands the joy of dance. Just watching him makes me happy and makes me want to get up and dance with him. If only we could all live like Tommy Franklin.

In an effort to live in joy, I'm planning to bring more dance into my life. This doesn't mean filling another night with a dance class, which I love doing but haven't the time at the moment. I'm going to dance in the kitchen and dance on the way to get dressed and dance in the gym and, very carefully, wiggle my hips in the shower. I hope that by including this joyful movement in everyday life, I can reconnect with that feeling I had when I danced as a little girl.

What are you going to do to connect with the joy in your life? To make every moment count?

Made strong by time and fate

Stripes with red always seems so French to me.

This skirt is probably about 8 years old. Still good.

Bright tights for a terrible day.

nov 7, 2013

They didn't help brighten my mood. I cried in my cube. I cried in yoga. I cried at home and then sorted myself out and moved on to the next day.

dress: Joe Fresh
tights: We Love Colours
shawl: Indigo
boots: shoe party

Today I'm thankful for family and friends who are there to lean on and love when things are less than great. They help pull me out of my dark spirals. And for that I am grateful.

Ok leggings as pants, lets try again.

nov 6, 2013

I hardly count these as leggings though. They're made of a scrunchy material so they are just tight pantaloons! Right?

top, jacket & leggings: Ricki's
boots: Bull Boxer

Today I'm thankful for leggings and pants and tights that stay up all the time. Of which, these are not.

Filling the walls

Last week I had a day off. I spent the wee hours at the dentist and then the rest of the morning hiding from the snow and ice.
Then I framed my new Ferris Wheel print and it looks so great!

And then I took a really ugly painting that was just holding a place until I could find something to fill the awkward size and made it fabulous!
Sadly, because of the winter wonderlandness of the day I wasn't about to venture to the craft store for the supplies that I needed. I covered cardboard with some white wrapping paper, coloured the chevrons with black Sharpie marker and used gold nail polish to paint the heart. I'm so pleased with how it turned out!

I'm so thankful to be getting back into making things. After having a tiny apartment for 2 years and having no home base for 2 years I'm so excited to be able to have handmade touches in my home!

Rough seas

Oh friends. These last few weeks have been rough. You know the kind of days where you feel like a complete idiot, even more than usual. And, unlike most other days, you're not doing a great job of hiding it and everyone else can see that you're an idiot too.
That has been me. Every day has been the kind of day where you question your worth and value.

I feel like I'm absolutely failing at life. Aside from having a wonderful cozy home that I share with my wonderful, encouraging Gentleman Caller (for whom I am eternally grateful), I feel like I'm behind. I'm losing the race. I think I forgot to even enter. I've made certain choices such as travelling for a total of 3.5 years that I wouldn't change for the world. But that also means that I haven't been building my career or furthering my education where all my other peers are.

I know that I'm 32 but in some ways I feel so much younger because I don't have it all figured out. I've spoken to friends who do seem to have it all worked out and they laugh in my face. They have no idea what they are doing either. Their lives just look good on paper.

I know you can't have everything at the same time. And usually I'm pretty good at remembering that a lot of the stuff that seems to define success in or culture is stuff that I have no desire for.

I guess we just keep moving forward and trying to figure things out as we go. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.

Home time

Photos make a house a home.

I was so excited to come across . And I was even more excited when there was a discount!

What I really love is that I got some Peel & Stick photos. Such amazing quality! And they're stickers that re-stick multiple times on your wall! And they're cool!

I was in no way compensated or even contacted by Posterjack. I just really like cool things and photos!! EEEE!
I'm so excited to keep on making my home more cozy!

Apparently leopard print is practically a neutral. Or so says the internet.

So I decided to wear all the leopard print I own at one time. Don't worry, it's not overwhelming. Clearly, I need MORE!

I decided on two halloween costumes this year. I dressed as Alice in Wonderland for the whole day at work and a cookie for our United Way event.

The best part of this cookie costume is that it was made 20 years ago. I think I won a costume contest in grade 8!

Today I'm thankful for my mama, who made this costume!
