Cold as cold

Today it was so cold my nose hairs hurt.

Today it was so cold that my eyes started to water. And then froze to my cheek. All in the space of walking one block.

This photo is from a week ago when it was lovely out, a balmy -14C (7F) and I went to a 2 hour walk.

This is the forecast for tomorrow. With the windchill it's -55C (-67F). Which, of course, is insane. And I realize that I'm the lamest by talking about the weather. But it has made me come up with some inventions.

1) A car that drops you off at the front door and self parks. No walking outside while the wind tears your face off.

2) A heating pad in you bed that you can start from your phone. That way when you get home your bed will be cozy and your toes toasty.

Until then I'm under the covers. Literally.

I've been getting terrible headaches. So much so that the last thing I'm able to do when I get home from a day of staring at a computer is stare at a different computer and blog. I have outfits. I might even have things to say... Not now though. For now I'm just trying to hold on.

A small winter story

A couple of weeks ago the Gentleman Caller and I thought we'd get out of town to chill out, to relax, to be silent and still. So we headed out to my family's cottage. It's winterized but it's a rather lot of work to get it fired up and shut down. The furnace takes a while to heat up, the water takes a while to run through the pipes and requires a bit of coaxing. It was the first time that I'd ever attempted to do this.

Getting the cottage fired up was pretty easy. Fortunately, my dad was able to turn on the furnace so we didn't have to leave for three hours while it became livable in there.

We had a lovely time. Reading books. Stoking the fire. Watching New Girl. Cooking and being awesome.

We even went snowshoeing. It was a bit of gong show as neither of us knew what we were doing. We had borrowed the snowshoes and the cold weather gear. Sadly, the ski pants were mighty tight. So much so that I couldn't really use my legs to their full advantage. And also snowshoeing is damn hard work.

EWWWW ALERT: The chilled out weekend was rudely cut short when I heard a sound and smelled a smell. Our cottage is not on a sewer grid. We have out own sewer pump and, disgustingly, a pipe froze solid and there was a small overflow into the basement. We shut everything off and then cleaned up our mess at 11:00 at night and drove home. The expert (my great Dad!) had to go out the next day to sort it out. The problem was much smaller than expected and all is well. So other than a gross and disappointing end it was a lovely weekend!

Today I'm thankful for small adventures with this wonderful man.

Long weekend plans

This weekend is a long one. I guess the powers that be finally came to their senses and gave us a day off in the middle of the worst month ever. It's called family day and it's awesome. This Monday is also my regular day off so I get Tuesday off as well. SUPER LONG WEEKEND!

I'm so excited for it. I have not much planned. But there are a few goals that I'm hoping to achieve.

* Drinks with a friend
* Valentine's dinner and bubbly with the Gentleman Caller

* Gym
* Coffee
* take in recycles
* phone AirMiles to make a trip happen
* buy some glitter (project in the works!)
* work on a photo project
* get supplies to make Dukkah

* Gym
* Coffee
* Reading - I really want to try to have less screen time this weekend. Maybe while watching a movie I could knit instead of Pintresting
* Make watermelon mint juice
* Perhaps walk to the fancy hotel and watch Olympics and have a drink in the fancy lounge

* Brunch
* Organize shoes
* Try on leggings and tights - throw away the crap ones. Organize the good ones.
* Make a cauliflower base pizza
* Make apple spinach mint juice (try it with black cherry bourbon!!)
* Pick up parents from the airport - coming back from Cuba!

* Sleep in!
* Drink tea
* Work on glitter project
* Sweep the apartment
* Clean the kitchen
* Gym
* Ringette game

I want to accomplish all of these things. But in the most gentle way possible. Lots of rest, relaxation, laughs and music.

I've disappeared.
It's because I'm hibernating.
And trying to get over a headache for the last two weeks.

And dreaming of who I was when I was this girl. I think I might have lost her.

That is all.

Back in October or November I came across a skirt that I loved. I couldn't stop thinking about it. Even though it was a mini skirt. Even though it was covered in sequins. Even though it was impractical.  But at $50, I just couldn't justify it.

One of my fabulously shoppy friends kept an eye on it for me and let me know when it went down to $15! $15!!! How could I possibly resist?

I love the skirt. My bosses loved the skirt. But I every so nearly had a wardrobe malfunction. I bought the skirt a little big. I thought that it would be rather less unseemly to wear to work than a slightly too tight sequinned skirt. However, by the time that I walked down the stairs, to my car, drove to work and walked up the stairs the skirt had slid down considerably. I had to borrow a pin to sort myself out for the rest of the day! Still, worth it.

Today I'm thankful for over-prepared co-workers who can help in times of near-crisis.

Another situation

If I could pair black and white with a pop of colour on a pretty much a daily basis I think that I would. In fashion and in home decor.

Plus since it's so cold, I can layer one million items.

Today I'm thankful for Zumba class. Dancing makes me happy. Even if I have to pretend that I look just like the instructor.
