yellow beans

As an introvert it's important to have some time to myself. Thursday was that day. I went to the Halloween store and then came home to cuddle up and read.

My green goblin boots have served me well. I saw them when I first moved to my little village in England. I visited them every week, just to say hello. They were expensive and I couldn't afford them. Finally a year and a half later they went on sale, only 2 weeks before I was leaving! I love them! I wore them travelling all over Europe, consequently they are pretty beat up.

Fall was nice and long and then the inevitable happened. It snowed. But not in a way that was just a little bit so that we could get used t the idea of it being winter. Oh no. There was nearly 2 days of snowstorm. And of outrageous winds and slipping and sliding around.
That kind of weather requires a warm dress and flat, grippy shoes. It also requires a whole lot of trying to be act as grumpy as I feel.

Brrrr and Tea

I have had so much tea today in an attempt to stay slightly warm. I know I was complaining about my office being too hot. Ok now it's freezing and I deserve it. However my mama brought me an early christmas present of a cast iron Japanese tea pot. Brilliant!

Today's grey, cold, snowy and hideously windy day deserved something to brighten it up. The answer, of course, is OUTRAGEOUSLY YELLOW TIGHTS! I always feel vaguely like a canary...

Lo que paso paso

Ohhhh Friday got away from me with work, drinks, salsa dancing, and movie watching. There just wasn't time for pictures. I've worn pretty much this same outfit before. I love how I feel in it: very ladylike and proper.

Today I called Kentucky in search of my shoes and UPS thinking they were going to Slim's Pizza. As if an imaginary pizza place would be in need of a wicked pair of purple shoes!

In other news, I slept for exactly 1 hour last night, from 1am-2am. I do not understand how doctors and menopausal women manage to cope. Zzzz

My Heidi hair was the only good thing to come out of this today:

I can't decide if it's awesome or ridiculous!

Purple People Eater

Today was the first ringette of the season. We are all clearly and dangerously unfit. But it was good fun! And my hair was super curly only by sleeping with buns in all night! Success!

Gluten free?

I've decided that I'm going to try to go gluten free for a month just to see if I can feel better. I think it's going to be tough but I'm pretty sure that this will help. I went shopping and bought many things to make my life easier.

Colourful Birthday Party

As a theme for this year I went with something simple: dress as a colour. We went to karaoke which was awful for the first hour. The machine didn't work and they weren't terribly helpful. Eventually they split us into 2 rooms and it was actually really fun!

Durga is full of fearlessness and patience, and never loses her sense of humour

Today I was fortunate enough to be invited to come to a very important festival for the people from Bhutan. It's the worship of the goddess of power, Durga.  She is fiercely compassionate. She is independent from the universe and anything and everyone. She rides  lion or tiger! I think that I'd like to know this goddess.

We went to the apartment of some of our clients and watched as about 30 people filed into the living room and sat on the floor facing an elaborate and colourful shrine. Two men were reading from books at the same time. Although I didn't understand any of it it was the perfect time to practise mindfulness meditation and loving-kindness. While watching the incense rise and the colourful flowers and fruit surrounding the pictures of the goddess I was able to wish happiness, peacefulness, comfort, health, and freedom to our Bhutanese hosts. Then everyone stood up and sang. It was beautiful and nearly made me cry. In our western culture we are so isolated from ourselves, our families and friends, and our faith. This was so personal and full of community. After the ceremony we went across the hall to another apartment and were fed the most amazing food: fruit, rice with cinnamon and cardamon, a thin doughnut-type bread, a sort of cilantro and pea salad and a wonderful veggie curry. They were so hospitable and kept refilling out plates. Absolutely delicious! They said that they were thinking of opening a restaurant some day. I would be there every day! It was such an honour to be included.

you can't save me now, I'm in the grip of a hurricane

Today I did nothing. Well I slept it, ordered take out (Lobster and Broccoli dip... amazing!), and basically cleaned my mini-apartment so that I can accommodate friends for birthday celebrations tomorrow!
Am about to go to my traditional Friday Night with my family and family friends. I can remember being 4 years old and inviting my aunt and uncle over for Friday Night. It's great when you both like and love your family!

Today is my birthday! I'm old(er)! To be honest I often forget how old I am. I have friend that range about 10 years on either side of me and it really doesn't matter. Unless, of course, you are looking for a working holiday visa in another country. Then it really does matter and that means I'd better stop being tempted by ebay shoes and keep saving money.
oct 14 2010

My mom stopped by my work today with a birthday pumpkin pie. She is so cute. I cut it into tiny pieces and walked around with a silver tray in one hand and a can of whipping cream in the other. It was like I was in grade 4 again and making friends at school through baked goods.

Trivia hooligan

Wednesdays are date night/trivia night. The prize for each round is a pitcher of free beer. My team doesn't especially want the picture since most of the team does not like the beer. The motto is "Be Consistent" rather than striving for excellence. It totally works. We didn't win any rounds but had high points in all of them and so are still #1 for the season! It's all about the glory!

I was basically glued to my computer watching the rescue of the Chilean miners at every spare moment. It was fascinating. And now with all the furor about the one miner whose wife and mistress both showed up. I really don't think that is what should be on the front page. We should all just let it be this wonderful story about survival, bonding, ingenuity and freedom. When has there ever been an event that everyone is transfixed by that is also something good?

Playing catch up

Tuesday I forgot to take a photo. There has to be a system that I can get into so that I learn to take a picture before I go to the gym and come home sweaty and not so very nice.

"We promised to find them and we have"

Oh my goodness. Have you been watching the rescue of the Chilean Miners? They have been trapped 5 km underground for 69 days. And everyone who's coming up seems calm, in good spirits, and relatively healthy. I cannot imagine what that would be like. I don't think that I would ever want to be in the dark again. I'm sitting here watching the live feed of the BBC and every time a miner comes up... Oh, look at their families! This must be so emotional and amazing. If I'm crying sitting in my safe and warm bed, the emotions that they must be feeling. They were cut off completely for 17 days without any communication. They are brave and these are the people that work hard jobs and never get any recognition. This is amazing... I am out of words and feeling very lucky to be safe where I am and sending love to all those miners and their families. Wow...

This is from last Friday, in which I promptly fell asleep after work until it was time to drink wine with the bookclub ladies. I can't find a proper picture of my Hard Harlot Shoes. It's like they've never existed!

So here's a detail from the shoes when I first bought them in Norwich, England in 2006.

First day on the job

oct 5 2010

The new office gets the sun all day long. To combat this I've rigged up a file folder taped to the window and moved every 2 hours. Blinds cannot come soon enough.

The smell of falling leaves

I'm usually prone to being rather lazy on EDO's but today I ran all my errands before 1pm! I got my computer fixed, my oil changed and took the recycles in. And still had time for a nap. It was a beautiful day and I feel so fortunate to have been able to enjoy it!

Oct 4 2010

Tomorrow I start my new job. I'm a little nervous but I think that if you don't have butterflies in your life then you are becoming too complacent. We need things to shake us up so that we can feel brave and then do even bigger and better things. It's good to do things that scare you. Big things, little things. There can be a small adventure everyday!

Leaving home

oct 1 2010

Since I was moving offices on Friday so that I can start my new job, and I knew that I would be crawling on the ground and moving filing cabinets this dress was in order. This is pretty much my equivalent of sweats. This is the comfiest and coziest of all dresses. I wore it travelling for 4 months and it's my go to when I'm not feeling well.
This is me standing in my dismantled office...
