Let's just get cozy

Being sick really takes away my motivation for anything. I just want to cuddle up, nap, drink tea and dream of warmer climes.
nov 25 2010

This outfit is nothing special. I didn't feel good in it. I'm not sure why I wore it at all. I guess it was born out of extreme tiredness and not wanting to be cold. I planned on wearing the fancy heels all day at work. That didn't go to plan as it was Flu Shot day so I spent most of the morning escorting young families to stand in line. I towered over them in stocking feet so I didn't want to be even more ridiculously tall. Plus, shockingly enough, the shoes aren't good for to-ing and fro-ing.

On Friday I celebrated 2 years working at Regina Open Door. I've had 4 job titles in that time. I feel so grateful for all the people that I've worked with and clients that I've met. I am blessed.
I am also still not feeling well and thus going to bed. Yet again. Honestly.

I will do most anything

People are friendly and helpful. On the walk home from work no less than 3 people stopped me to point out that my shoelace was untied. Unfortunately it was too cold to stop and tie it up. I kicked my legs out in Funny Walk style in order not to trip.

Today I got together with my lovely friend who is very talented. She's going to take pictures for my upcoming Etsy shop and help me with it! Hurrah! I've been putting off actually doing it because the photos I took were cold and harsh.

Cha Cha Cha

This morning at 4am I woke with a start from a cozy dream. Why did I wake up? Was the Homeless Hoarker* trying to climb in my windows? Was my landlord coming in at an outrageous hour to finally replace my window screens so that I could remove decorative items from my couch and place them back on the shelves/windowsills? No. As likely as any of those are, no. I had a sore throat. When I was a small child my doctor swore to me that I would outgrow my tonsil infections. To him I say BAH! I got sick while living in England and the doctor there said that it was the worst he'd ever seen. I'm attempting to will it away by huddling under the covers and thinking about garlic shrimp. Fairly valid viral defence I'd say.

I've never been able to find a representation of this dress. I nearly didn't buy it but it was just too fun to pass up. I also attempted to do a winged eyeliner line Keiko Lynn and it was ok but I feel this needs more practise at a more decent hour than 7am.

*The Homeless Hoarker is the man who I thought was sleeping under my window and coughing and hacking up a lung. This happened night after night and it was disgusting. Turns out it is someone who lives in my building and had their window open. Seriously gross.

Media Darling Pt 2

Today I feel like I was racing around like a mad woman. I'm semi in charge of the Christmas Hamper fundraising for our refugee clients. Many of them have been in refugee camps for years, separated from family, not allowed to go back to their homeland. And on top of all of that they're experiencing their very first winter. And may I just remind everyone that it is -21 tonight (that's -5.8F according to google). So we and some of the very generous individuals and companies in Regina are trying to help make this a happy, safe and warm holiday. The public library donated a book for each child so that the families can learn to read English together. I had to walk over there and elegantly balance the  box of books whilst walking on nearly frozen pins. I layered up sufficiently on top but somehow forgot to have anything but very thin tights on my legs. Mistake. I did, however, manage to get some boots that are both warm and not hideously ugly. Plus I feel like I could fight baddies in them. (I totally could!)
nov 22 2010

Then, as I'm still without a vehicle, my ever-loving daddio came to take me to the local cable TV station where I got to talk about the Hampers and why it was important for people to give. It airs tomorrow so I really hope that I don't sound like a fool.

Then I had to get a cab to the best part of the day: NEW HAIR!
Man, I just love the way it smells. And how soft it is. And how it just moves with a life of it's own in happiness... Also IT'S PINK. Partly.

Now I'm finally home and enjoying a glass of wine and catching up on Lost Season 5 (shhh don't tell me!)

Also this weekend the Gentleman Caller and I made delicious Indian food and giggled a lot. Then he burnt his back really badly on my scorching hot radiator. So that was less fun. Except that he claims that it doesn't hurt. I may be dating an android.

Walk away

I've been locked in a struggle with my radiator. I'm trying to hold out to the last moment to turn it on, not really to save energy just to have the satisfaction that winter is not yet here. Inevitably though, the radiator wins. Because he hates the cold less than I do. Sneaky.
nov 17 2010

I don't know what is going on. I used to be such a good sleeper. Last night I think that I slept for 2 hours. And then I couldn't sleep any longer. Today was long, cold and strange. Best to cuddle up and watch Lost.

I'd give you my hand if you'd reach out and grab it

I just love being in a multi-cultural world! I love learning about all corners of the earth from my clients and I love looking longingly at maps. For dinner tonight I had tzatziki, guacamole and chai tea. Even though they are from hugely different areas they went perfectly well together!
nov 16 2010

The bad part of the day was coming home to a building that smelled like a toilet. Or a toilet that had recently been cleaned by someone who just brushed their teeth but still had a lingering smell of unpleasantness. Luckily my apartment smelled like the inside of a salad bar. Which was a very small improvement. I guess.

Working on my evil villain laugh

Today I just wanted something simple to show off the amazingness of my shoes! They are actually pretty comfortable, I just wish they were slightly tighter on the top. I'm sure I can sort something out. I wish that they had arrived a week earlier. We've had such a nice fall and I would have loved to have worn them out more. Now that everything is covered in ice and snow, walking to work in these would be treacherous.

THE SHOES (cartoon villain style)

My Jeff Silverman shoes finally arrived! I ordered them at the beginning of September and have been waiting ever since. I picked the colours and they are crazy! I love them! I feel like a cartoon villain, like a combination of The Joker and Cruella Deville.

Folly

Today I am a grumpy bump.
nov 8 2010

I think it partially has to do with my shoulder and neck hurting from a recent run-in with a flight of stairs. It was karma, really. I was running up the stairs with a co-worker in tow and she commented how I should be careful on the stairs in my heels. I pfft-ed her and said “Oh I can do anything in heels” and thus taunted the gods. Less than a minute later I was coming back down the stairs thinking to myself how I used to be afraid of these skinny, slippery stairs... And then I fell. It was only about 4 stairs but it was the top four. I had to catch myself from tumbling down the remaining 7 by wrenching my arms behind me. Awesome.

I have a history of stupid things happening to me. Once upon a time a horse farted on me. I was enjoying a leisurely mid-afternoon walk in the English countryside. The sun was shining, the breeze off the sea was salty and brisk. I sat on my favourite bench overlooking a field of sheep. It was an idyllic afternoon. As I made my way back home I walked by a corral where a lovely horse resided. Usually he was at the far side but on this fateful day he was near that fence beside the path. As I’m a bit afraid of horses (have you seen their eyes? They are enormous!) readied myself to tiptoe past trepidatiously. As I was about to pass him he looked over his shoulder, blinked at me innocently with his massive eyes, lifted his tail and proceeded to fart right in my face! It was everywhere! And the smell wouldn’t come out of my hair. I’m pretty sure it changed the texture for a few days. It was horrifying.

I also had the misfortune of being caught on a door. I was running out the door to let my dog outside when the handle of the door slid under my ring. I was jerked back and off my feet, hanging by my hand from the door. By the time I was able to get to my feet my hand had swollen up around the handle and the ring and I wasn’t able to remove my hand. Finally I squeezed my  finger enough to pop it off the handle and I was once again a free woman. In pain, bleeding, numb but free. That’s when the phone rang to tell me that I wasn’t going to get the job I applied for. Bad day.

This past winter I managed to close the door of my father’s truck onto my fingers. The door was completely closed so I had to reach around my writhing body to unlatch it. Thank goodness I didn’t lock it. Luckily I was wearing mittens which seemed to provide some cushioning and no bones were broken. So that night, in consolation, I booked a trip to Cuba with one hand while the other was resting on a bag of frozen peas...

And then there were none

I was all excited to get to see my car. Since there's no obvious latch inside the car I didn't think that they would have got into the trunk. I had hope that my ringette equipment was still there. Dad took me out to the middle of nowhere to the claims lot. It was still in the garage so it was easy to find. The car looked like someone had driven it through a field and into a mud puddle. Oh it just looked awful. I've only ever seen it look like an 85 year old man had driven it, pretty much because that has been the case save for the last 3 months. I opened the door and a waft of smoke drifted out. There were dusty fingerprints and muddy footprints everywhere! It looks like that had a great time in there. Of course they took my parking meter change, my trench coat, and my ipod FM adapter. I opened the trunk... nothing was there. Just an old time and sadness. That means that I've now missed 2 ringette games and will have to buy all new equipment. And break in new skates. So disappointing.

Nothing of any import happened. Except that due to my grandfathers penchant for keeping everything, I contributed a bit of random history knowledge to my trivia team. What are these?

No they are not butt plugs as some teams thought (sorry mom). They're old fashioned glass telephone insulators! I have one! Yeah!

Oh and the police found my stolen car, with broken locks and ignition. Now begins the insurance process. The whole thing is so upsetting and disturbing that strangers have been in my personal space.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery?

I do this thing sometimes. And I don’t mean to and I’m not at all meaning to make fun of someone. It’s just that sometimes when I am speaking with someone who has an accent I unknowingly begin to mimic them. This is only with people who speak English as their first language: Australian, English, Southern... I lived in England but mostly hung out with Australians and suddenly I was talking like them. When I had a True Blood marathon I started talking to myself in Vampire Bill’s accent. I called UPS in Kentucky today and I found myself responding to her questions with a southern drawl. And this isn’t recent either. I remember working in a coffee  shop and serving an English woman. I didn’t realize that I was doing it until she asked me what part of England I was from! I think (I hope) it’s just because I love accents and words so much…  but really must be more careful in future so as not to offend anyone!

Wait... wasn't that popstar born yesterday?

I don't have TV. I don't read newspapers. I listen to the news on the radio. I don't know much about new things. Such as Willow Smith. What? Isn't she like a baby? Turns out, pretty much. Dude, she's 10. Does anyone else think that this is weird? Sure she sounds pretty good and look at those mad dance skillz but really? What were you doing at 10? I was playing with my Barbies and coming up with elaborate mysteries for them to solve. I was perfecting cartwheels and making earrings out of seeds. Who doesn't want to be a rock star? But childhood is so short and at the age of 10 I wouldn't be encouraging a little girl to fling her partially shaved head about and jiggle about on stage. She's a child. I wonder and worry about girls today. It's rough anyway but if this is what you're seeing other 10 year olds do then baking cookies with your mom suddenly isn't as exciting. I hope that she actually gets a childhood and doesn't look back to regret rushing forward too soon. It hurts my heart a bit.

I called the city, the police, the impound lot, every single towing company to see who had towed it and how I could get it back. Apparently no one had. And also it appears that my car is the third most stolen car in the city. Awesome. So that's that then. I guess I just wait till the police recover it and see if it's still drivable. Super awesome.

SPARKLE SHOES!

nov 1 2010

I think I've lost my camera! Or at least I thought that most of the day. Only when I was getting ready for my mid-afternoon cuddle down nap I found it between the bed and the wall...

Today I did boring grown up things such as start saving for my retirement and buying groceries.
The most exciting thing I did by far was to make SPARKLE SHOES!!!!

Yes I said it! whaaaat?
So very exciting!
I took an old pair of Nine West shoes I rarely wear and sparklated them with mod podge and glitter.
Look how they turned out!
I think they could do with one more coat...

Let's see if they hold up to walking around tomorrow!

This is Halloween!

For Saturday night I was a Ringmaster of a Circus.
oct 30 2010

We decided to go on a pub crawl. I'd never been on one in Regina and I was excited! I wanted to dance and hang out and mostly see awesome costumes. So we got to the first bar and had to wait in line for 20 minutes. We were assured that once we registered there would be no waiting in line. Since it took forever to get in we were only there for less than half an hour and then we were piled on the bus. At the next bar we were dropped off and had to wait in line outside for only 10 minutes. Now remember this is Canada at the end of October. It was really cold!!! After about an hour they rushed us out of the bar to the bus. However the bus wouldn't let us in as apparently it wasn't our bus. So we waited until another pulled up and piled on to this one. At the final bar they dropped us in the parking lot and took off. The bar wouldn't open the doors to let us in. Maybe they were over capacity but that's why we paid $20, so that they knew how many people would be showing up at what time. There were no bouncers or any representatives from the pub crawl there. People were cold and impatient so they kept pushing the whole crowd into a wall. It was cold, squishy and actually quite scary. If it hadn't been for the gentleman holding back the crowd with his muscles I would have been worried that I could have been trampled. After 45 minutes of this nonsense we squeezed ourselves out (which was like an equally horrifying birthing experience) and walked back to my place. Then to redeem the night we went for dinner and were home by 11:30. I maintain that this is not because we are old but rather because the pub crawl was very poorly organized. I've been looking for an email address so I can let them know but, alas, they are sneaky and don't seem to have one.
