What it means to be blessed

This photo is from Monday but I'm writing this on Wednesday...

Today was my last day of work. So very strange. I've been so lucky to be able to work at such an interesting place. I love traveling and love learning about different cultures and languages. Working with Newcomers to Canada has let me dream of travel while learning so many things about the world.

My workplace is so diverse. We took some pictures yesterday and in one picture alone it was like a mini United Nations: Canada, Romania, Pakistan, Syria, Cambodia, Burundi, China. You know, just a regular day at the office. Any job can be a good job if you're with good people.

My coworkers have been so wonderful to me the last few days (and always). I was able to go for brunch with my old department this weekend. Then the girls got us surprise samosas. Then they planned a surprise potluck breakfast on Tuesday morning. That evening about 12 of us went out for dinner. It was such an honour that these amazing, busy women took time out of their lives to spend sometime with me to say goodbye.

And take this dress for instance. My coworker bought it for herself but found that it didn't fit. She brought it for me to try on at work and I just never even took it off. How amazing is that? Thank you Sarah!

I feel overwhelmed by the care and affection that I've felt from everyone, clients and coworkers alike. I will miss them all greatly. I already do. If any of my people are reading this: You have changed my life and that's something that I won't soon forget. Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my very full heart. Merci, Gracias, Grazie, Takk, Danke, Shukrun, Obrigado, Shukriya, Mahadsanid, Arkun, Kamsamnida, Galatoome, Xie Xie...

Buried in the mud

The Gentleman Caller spent the weekend visiting with his grandparents and family members. I spent the weekend dusting behind my bed.
sept 24 2011

I also went for lunch with my mom and aunt for her birthday. It is still nice enough to sit outside, which is a blessing. It was such a lovely afternoon to spend with two beautiful women.

Nice Dream

I have nothing to say really.
I'm slowly moving out of my miniapartment. Everyday I take more things out. Without memories on my walls it feels like I'm slowly disappearing... only to reappear on the other side of the world!

sept 22 2011

I don't know how people who have houses and children do this moving thing... I have so much stuff and my place is so very tiny.

Today I am thankful for long work days and long fun evenings. These are the days you can only have in nice weather when energy is abundant.

Sunday Shoes: Aldo Heeled Clogs

As I was cleaning out my apartment I discovered I have a rather lot of shoes. Miss Sal from Already Pretty has a series called Sunday Shoes. I've decided to share them to remind myself why I love them, the stories behind them and as an archive of the ones I've had to say goodbye to.

I bought these ridiculously high shoes in order to sparklate the clog heels. Gorgeous but nearly impossible to walk in...

Coworker: I know I shouldn't let my son sleep in my bed. This morning I woke up and his toes were in my mouth!

FBFF: refashioning

Elly  from Adventures in Refashioning is hosting this week's topic of refashioning your things to make them awesome again!

I had this black pencil skirt that I've had since 2006. Eventually it got boring and I just couldn't be bothered with it. So I decided to embroider a Japanese flowering tree on it. Given that I'd only stitched a couple pieces of paper before I'm rather pleased with how this turned out!

This made me want to wear this skirt again and be joyful in it!

These are old pictures but they still work!!

I arrived at work to a lot of stares today. I hope that it was because of the hair.

sept 21 2011

This was my only night to be at home by myself. It was glorious. I'm pretty booked up for the next little while with friends and family and packing.

Today I am thankful that tomorrow is Thursday. And that is enough for today.

Learning virtues

A friend of mine did my numerology numbers a while ago. She said that I was on my way to a very lovely life but in order to secure that I needed to learn patience, perseverance and forgiveness. I made posters and put them up on my bedroom wall so that they would be the first and last things I saw. I have been trying to see things in that light. When I'm waiting at the grocery store? Patience. When I'm dealing with insurance companies? Perseverance. Dealing with painful events from the past? Forgiveness. When I didn't have a job? That was to teach me about all three. I feel like I've been learning. I hope that I have.
The job I have now is all about patience. I talk about the same things to the same people day after day. I try to explain the same concept over and over in different way so that my clients understand. Having patience is easy when everything is great. When I have had enough sleep, and I'm feeling like myself. Today patience is hard to come by. Today I feel like my head is about to explode with pressure and pain. My eyes are puffy from allergies and a cold. My breathing is difficult due to asthma and harvest. I just want to be in bed and not speaking with people that I don't understand. Today I am impatient and unhelpful. Tomorrow I will be better.

Where the winter takes your bones

Friday was the 2 year dateaversay with the Gentleman Caller!! Huzzah! We had a fun grocery/wine store adventure, made a delish dinner and had some champagne (which we got a discount on because it was dateaversary! Another reason why independent store rock.)

sept 16 2011

I never had a boyfriend before the GC (shocking, I know). I've learned so much about having fun and learning to love in the past 2 years. I didn't know that I could feel so comfortable with someone who gave me butterflies in my stomach...

Today I am thankful for our auspicious alliance and for the Australian adventure that we are soon to be going on...

Like a diamond mine

Today is the first trivia of the season. We'll only be able to go for the first 3 weeks but our plan is to put our team so far ahead that no one will be able to catch up...

sept 15 2011

We're in second place overall, trailing by 2 points so the plan seems to have flaws.

dress: Joe Fresh
tank: Smart Set
tights: We Love Colours
shoes: Red or Dead "Maxa" from ebay

Today I'm thankful for my little trivia team coming together again. Sad that one founding and vital team member is no longer there...

Sunday Shoes: Sparkly Steve Madden's

As I was cleaning out my apartment I discovered I have a rather lot of shoes. Miss Sal from Already Pretty has a series called Sunday Shoes. I've decided to share them to remind myself why I love them, the stories behind them and as an archive of the ones I've had to say goodbye to.

Steve Madden from Maurice's

I bought these shoes during a girlie trip to America. I wasn't planning on buying anything at all but these glinted my way and with a coupon they were unexpected cheap!

FBFF: Words of Wisdom

Today on FBFF Katy says "Let's share the words of wisdom imparted on you that made a difference. Talk about who gave you the advice, what it meant to you and how it is still relevant."

Once upon a time I was a young psychology major I took a class from an amazing professor. He had actually taught my mom years before. He is a rather eccentric person and came waltzing into class, long white hair and floor length cape flowing behind him. I took two classes from him: Psychology of Religion and Parapsychology. It was always so interesting. I remember him saying that life goes on no matter what. You can try to stop change but it will come anyway. He said:

"Grasp loosely and release firmly"

He explained that it was like carrying a small and delicate bird in your hand. It's so beautiful that you just want to hold on to it. But if you hold it too tightly then you will crush it and even the memory will be ruined. If you take care to be gentle and help things along their way when their time with you is done than you will have the beauty of the time you had together.

Embroidered fabric "notepaper" - made by me

I'm a nostalgic person. Even now that I'm leaving for Australia soon I'm finding that I'm starting to miss things that I still have. It's like I'm pre-nostalgic. It's taken me a long time to figure out that things, places, and people come like the seasons. Sometimes they are with me for a long time, some just for a short season in my life. I want to always remind myself that I shouldn't try desperately to hold on to old times. By doing that I get sad and disappointed and am always living in the past. This saying reminds me to live in the moment, enjoy what is here, and let it go with grace when it's time.

It's tough to do. Be brave my little friends.
PS: that professor was pretty old and he always walked to school even in the dead of winter. About 5 or 6 years ago he was up on his roof and somehow fell off. He became a quadriplegic because of that fall and had to live at our rehab hospital. After some time of recovery he started to teach again, in small groups that came to the hospital for class. A friend of mine went to visit him and he seemed like his old self. He said that this accident and the state of his body were just a new challenge that he had to learn to live with. He wasn't grasping too viciously at his past abilities but rather accepting and perfecting his new body and the challenges and beauty that brought... Amazing man.

Working with people from other countries means that we  talk about the similarities and differences about our cultures, lives, and most importantly FOOD!
I have a new favourite food thanks to my Syrian friend. It's called Makdous and basically it's a salty pickled eggplant stuffed with red peppers and walnuts. And that doesn't sound like something I would normally love but I really really do... sooooo good!

In other news it really feels like autumn. It got down to -4 C (28F) last night and it was chilly. Not cold enough to close my windows all the way but enough to pile a cuddle blanket on the bed and snuggle in.

sept 14 2011

This also means that I'm able to wear tights! And that is an exciting moment! I walked about 10 blocks to meet my family for dinner and had to wear a hat! I think that I'm only excited about this colder weather because I know that I'm not going to be staying in it for very long at all!

Today I am thankful for only having 9 days left of work. So thankful. But I will miss the people I work with so very much...
