The helmet

As the lovely Geetabix pointed out, I was not wearing a helmet in my cycling photos. For shame! I do have one and it's super cute! I just haven't rummaged through all the winter stuff to find it again. I will do so before going on an actual bike ride!

The helmet is from Yakkay and was a gift from my parents. I love it! It's so silly and pretty! (and fully functional and safety approved...)

Let's get un-unfit!

FBFF! Go to Katy's Modly Chic to learn more!

I didn't have time/inclination to search through my archives to find a fitness-related picture. This is a makeup-related picture from a store window in London.

1. Do you keep some kind of fitness routine? Why?
In the winter I play ringette about twice a week. In the summer all I want to do is ride my bicycle and go for long walks. It gives me something to look forward to. And because my mom always does this, I pump my groceries. Why carry them when you can walk to your car or similar whilst getting buff?

2. Has working out, maybe training for a marathon or something of that nature, helped with your own perception of body image?
I think sometimes realizing how far you can push your body gives you new appreciation for how my strength you have.

3. When you are hitting the gym or just going out for a long walk what do you wear? Is it about functionality or fashion?
I usually wear Lulu Lemon pants because even if I'm working out there's no reason for my bottom not to look it's best. Mostly I wear something I feel comfortable getting all sweaty in...

4. Do you feel there is a cultural perception of what you ‘should’ be doing for your own physical fitness?
I think I should be doing more because, you know, society wants me to buy more things like P90X so that I can be a skinny minnie... but at the same time I am who I am...

5. Dream big… what would be your ultimate fitness goal.
Ideally I'd like to lose the sugar belly and learn to like running. Apparently it's a thing that people like... I'll keep trying. Probably. Actually I think it would be lovely to be strong. And not to break into an asthmatic wheeze every time I exercise, cough, or laugh. That would be pretty fab.

Easter cycler

Any sort of family dinner at our house is always a loud and fun affair. We had 21 people at my parents house and everyone brought something so it was a little bit less work for my mom.

Before dinner I went for a quick spin on my beloved bicycle. It was one of the very first things that I bought when I returned to Canada after spending all of my money (and some of my parent's) travelling around Europe for 4 months. I love that I can ride it in skirts and heels, that I can go to the grocery store and put my shopping in the basket. I don't love that I have to navigate a double door situation and carry it up a flight of stairs and store it in my apartment (that looker is heavy!).

Today I am thankful for loud, loving families! I wouldn't trade mine for the world!

Hopping down the bunny trail

By popular request

The Skittles Vodka!
I found it on Pinterest and it is fabulous!

Filming Easter

Saturday was Easter dinner with friends. The Gentleman Caller and my best friend both recently completed the Film Studies program along with many of their friends. Quite a few moved away after convocation last year. As per tradition we all got together for a delicious potluck Easter dinner! It was so lovely seeing that whole group again!

april 23, 2011

I brought some potatoes and Skittles-infused vodka. Mixed with Sprite, it was delicious! And so brightly coloured! This will be my project for the summer!

cardigan: Ricki's
dress & leggings: Joe Fresh
studded blue suede shoes: gift, from Spain
orange purse, necklace: gift, from Spain

Today I am thankful for the fact that sometimes even when things change, they stay the same. Also all of my lovely gifts from my mom and dad who went to Spain recently.

Good Friday

I generally enjoy the Easter season. It's spring time and usually sunny. It's about rebirth and new life. And it's much less stressful than Christmas. My family always goes to church with my grandparents and then out for all you can eat salad bar and fish dinner. The church service is always long and I'm prepared for that. This year however was a huge shock. The service was given by a priest that we've never seen before and it was horrible. It was all fire and brimstone and everyone is going to hell! We felt that it was hurtful, offensive and not the right sermon for Easter or the message that the church has been delivering in the last 50 years. Anyways... it was an eye-opener...
apr 22 2011

After dinner the Gentleman Caller and I went to a fundraiser at a dodgy arcade called Wonderland. It was an all you can play for $10! Lots of our friends were there and I worked off my salad dinner playing some classic Dance Dance Revolution and air hockey!

dress: Jones New York
cardigan: gift
belt: Ricki's
tights: We Love Colours
shoes: Fly London
earrings: art fair
necklace: gift, from Spain
purse: gift, Danier

Yes, that is my back alley where I can place bags of cans and glass recycling and it will be gone within a half hour. And no, I did not wear this to play DDR. Shockingly enough. Also I had my FBFF all ready to go this Friday but when I went to link it to Katy's page it turns out I did the wrong week... huh.

Today I am thankful that I have a faith in a God that is good and kind and loving and that I believe that the religion I was brought up with is one piece of the puzzle that is the Creator. And that I'm interested in and appreciate other religions so that I'm able to gain insight on other pieces of the puzzle as well.

Cartoon Superhero

Happy Easter everyone!
I have Easter outfits coming later on, once I catch up.
I got all dressed up like a superhero to walk to the post office and get a slurpee. It was lovely and sunny out until I turned the corner and then suddenly I was in the middle of a wind storm. And by the time I got home it was snowing! I'm hoping that believing with all my heart that spring is really here will make it be so.

Later on my little cousin and I went to our other cousin's improv night and had a grand old time.

blazer: Ricki's
dress: H&M
tights: We Love Colours
shoes: Hard Hearted Harlot
earrings: gift from Mom when she went to Spain

Today I am thankful that my cousins live so close (actually, we grew up on the same street...) and how they are growing into wonderful people that I am pleased to know!

I wouldn't want it any other way

My goodness! You internet people are truly amazing! Thank you thank you for you comments on yesterdays 'poor me' post. And thanks so much for sharing your best compliments that you've received. I think it's pretty important to keep the good things close to your heart. Once I went to a conference for employment counsellors and learned about portfolios. Where you keep a little representation of everything that makes you who you are. Things like degrees, resumes and references but also thank you letters, compliments, and things you are proud of. That way, even if you don't bring it to a job interview to show potential employers your skills, you can look at it before to remind yourself of all the successes that you've had in the past. I call it my Happy Danielley file. Anyways, the point is that I'm going to print out all your comments and tuck it there! So thank you a zillion times!
apr 16 2011

This is from Saturday night when the Gentleman Caller and I went bowling for a work fuction of his. It was pretty fun and then we ended up at the local biker bar (last time I was there with my 62 year old co-worker and her 70 year old husband! So not actually dangerous at all!) and listened to a folky, hipster post-ska band.

top & cardigan: Ricki's
jeans: Smart Set
earrings: Santa Claus
necklace: some shop in Madrid
shoes: Spring

Today I'm thankful that I started this little blog, without which I never would have met any of you (yes you!) wonderful people who are working in small ways in your corner of the world to make it better and more lovely. Thank you...

This whole thing of not being able to find a job that I want to do has been getting me down. It's very lonely being at home all day by oneself. Couple the fact that I'm not sleeping well with lack of inspiration to get dressed properly has lead me to a slump, which I'm (hopefully mis-) labelling as an 'ugly stage' (I seem to go through one every 10 years or so). So in order to concentrate on lovely things to shake up me and maybe others who have been waiting too long for spring, today is compliments day!

Compliments are lovely aren't they? We all just love them. But the ones I love the most are the ones that are unexpected. Or come from somewhere I don't understand. It is these kind of compliments that make me think of myself in a different light. It points my idea of myself to look out a different window to see me and at different angle. And then I think "huh, the world is a pretty magical place".

Here's a couple that gave me pause because I never thought this way. These have really stuck with me through the years:

1. my mom's friend said that I have poise. I always thought that I was awkward and silly.

2. a regular customer at the pub I worked at said that I am a dark horse.  I guess I liked the idea that I'm more than what I seem and that someone would take the energy to see that.

3. a work mate said that I had the aura of "I am life!". It made me cry. Best compliment ever! I always thought that I was pretty invisible and would not garner much thought.

Your turn! What are your best / most surprising compliments?

Friday morning my sister an I went to be ladies. I got a luscious full body massage and she got a facial. It was a wonderful and relaxing way to spend the morning. Then we went for lunch together at a Japanese Korean fusion place that, apparently, I can't get enough of.

apr 15 2011

I didn't wear these shoes out and about. It snowed Thursday and Friday so there was no chance of hopping all over downtown with cute shoes on.

dress: Smart Set
tights: H&M
cartoon villain shoes: Jeff Silverman designed by me
glasses: Prada
earrings: folk fest vendor

Today I'm thankful for the lovely women I used to work with. They organized a going away dinner for my old boss at an amazing Afghani restaurant. It was so lovely to see them after being away from that office for a couple of weeks.

Some fabulous people requested that I show what I made in my crafty afty. Now I'm not an artist and this was mostly about playing. I've been dreaming of red hair and I really love how watercolour paints move...

Dressing down

I'm really behind in outfit posts. Ah well, what can you do?
Thursday I had a crafty afty with my friend. I hauled an enormous backpack of craft supplies over to her house and we sat on the floor, eating tacos, painting and chatting. The blank page is super intimidating! I always hesitate to make the first mark on a bit of pristine paper but once I do I always enjoy the process even if the end result isn't what I see in my head.

apr 14, 2011

I wanted to be as comfortable as possible for creativity to flow through. Then I remembered that Erin has "fashion sweatpants" and Allison has been "on a lifelong quest to make sweatpants suitable for public consumption". Soooooo I took some cropped yoga pants (the only sweats-like thing I own) and Danielle-ified them.

cardigan: Ricki's
dress: H&M

earrings: Folk Fest vendor

Today I'm grateful for the wonderful trivia team we had this year. It was such a pleasure to help everyone to find their knowledge niche and learn how to trust each other on who knew what! We won the semester overall so now we've won a keg party. We may have to recruit more beer-drinking friends to help us dispose of 16 jugs of beer...

Pop those peepers

Today was my first day at my new 1 day a week job. Basically I'm organizing the office of some landscape architects. All I did all day was look at rolled up plans, put them in piles according to year, unrolled them to take note of project number and if I could toss any and then colour coded the plans and projects. My hands are desperately aching for some lotion...

april 13 2011

Luckily a friend on mine works there and so we got to chat when she wasn't applying herself diligently to her tasks.
I probably should have worn something more... different. It was dusty and I was walking back and forth trying to find where items fit...

dress: Joe Fresh
tank: Smart Set
leggings: H&M
shoes: Campers
necklace: made by me

And then there's this one where I look like I'm T-Rexin':

Today I'm thankful for long dinners with people who were workmates but are now wonderful and treasured friends!

It's hard to hide a hundred girls in your hair

So I was reading Franca's post about the My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding theme party that she went to. And then I got sucked down a youtube vortex. I literally spent the entire day watching all five episodes of this show. I've always found gypsies and travellers fascinating.
apr 12 2011

I guess I've always wanted to know more about people who consider people and tradition more of a home than a place. I'm not sure how accurate this was but it was really interesting. And I couldn't stop watching it...

blazer: Ricki's with bright buttons added on by me
top: Joe Fresh
skirt: Next, embroidered be me
shoes: Ebay

Today I am thankful that I have a loving home that I can always go back to. And also that I'm not obsessed with a massive (or any) wedding.
